Brian was born and raised in a small town in central Iowa (Maytag Country). His love of hunting and fishing with his dad, especially pheasant/quail hunting, during the years of the 1985 Farm Bill, helped him pursue a career in conservation/wildlife management. Brian graduated from Iowa State University in 1996 with a B.S in Biology and went to graduate school at UTEP, where he received my M.S. studying Mohave rattlesnakes, their venom, and evolution. Brian has worked for the USFWS for over 22 years now, starting in January 2004 in the Tucson, Arizona office of Arizona Ecological Services and then moved to Flagstaff in 2007, where he has lived ever since. Brian works in the Ecological Services program implementing the Endangered Species Act.
Brian spends much of his free time outdoors, mountain biking, hiking, camping, hunting, fishing (especially fly fishing) with his family. Brian is prone to spending a crazy amount of time every April/May chasing turkeys and he’s often hard to reach every spring. Brian’s wife and kids are his favorite hunting and fishing buddies. If you talk to Brian about flyfishing, chances are he’ll talk about dry flies being superior or he’ll talk on and on about saltwater flats and bonefish. When he’s not outdoors with his family, Brian is a volunteer Hunter Education instructor (13+ years), mountain bike coach, and youth hunting/fishing mentor, doing his best to warp young minds into living life outdoors. Brian has mentored youth at a local NWTF-sponsored youth turkey hunting camp for 13+ years and helped several youths on their deer and elk hunts when they’ve needed it.
